Full Itinerary Day by Day

Day 1: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

You’ll be picked up from your Arusha hotel at 7:30 AM and driven to Tarangire National Park for a full day of game viewing, picnic lunch included. As Tanzania’s third-largest national park, Tarangire is instantly recognizable by its towering baobab trees, which dwarf the wildlife grazing beneath them. The park’s centerpiece, the Tarangire River, sustains some of the largest elephant herds found anywhere in Africa. Expect strong chances of spotting lion, leopard, cheetah, lesser kudu, buffalo, oryx, eland, giraffe, and zebra. In the evening, you’ll return to your camp or lodge for dinner.

Day 3: Lake Manyara

An early 7:00 AM pickup from your hotel starts the day’s journey to Lake Manyara National Park for a full day of game viewing, with a picnic lunch along the way. The park entrance opens into dense acacia and mahogany forest, setting the tone for the day ahead. Game drives continue into the evening, with a short break for lunch. Keep watch for buffalo, giraffe, impala, baboon, and blue monkey as you move through the park. Manyara’s tree-climbing lions are a well-known highlight, though finding them takes some luck, and in the right season the lakeshore turns pink with enormous numbers of flamingo. You’ll head back to camp in the evening for dinner.

Day 4: Lake Natron

The day begins after breakfast around 8:00 AM, with packed lunch boxes for the roughly 3.5-hour drive from Mto wa Mbu/Manyara to Lake Natron — a striking, otherworldly destination known for its highly alkaline, unusually shallow waters, averaging just about a meter in depth. After checking into your lodge and a short rest, you’ll set out on foot with a Maasai guide along the lakeshore, keeping an eye out for birdlife, particularly the lesser flamingo. Lake Natron is East Africa’s most significant and consistent breeding ground for this species, hosting up to two million birds during peak breeding season, with most egg-laying and hatching occurring between September and January. Following the walk, you’ll return to camp for a well-earned dinner and rest.

Day 5: Lake Natron – Central Serengeti

An early start, around 6:00 AM, brings a light hike with a Maasai guide to the nearby Ngare Sero waterfalls, where you can cool off in the mist of water cascading down the rocks of this scenic gorge — sturdy footwear is recommended. You’ll be back at the lodge by around 8:30 AM for breakfast before setting off toward the Serengeti. The drive passes through a mix of towns, villages, savannah, and forest, with opportunities to spot antelope, wildebeest, and zebra along the way. You’ll enter the Serengeti in the afternoon — widely regarded as one of the world’s premier wildlife sanctuaries — for an afternoon game drive across its open plains, with a chance of encountering large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle, or a pride of lions resting in the shade. Lunch is taken as a picnic during the day’s game drive. The day closes with dinner and a restful night at your accommodation.

Days 6 & 7: Central Serengeti

These two days can be approached in either of two ways: a relaxed breakfast followed by a full day of game drives from around 9:00 AM, with packed lunch, returning to the lodge by early evening around 6:00 PM; or an early departure at 6:00 AM for a morning game drive, followed by a return to camp for breakfast, some downtime, and an afternoon game drive with packed lunch. Either way, you’ll be exploring the central Serengeti — the Seronera area — one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park, thanks to the year-round water source provided by the Seronera River, which draws a wide cross-section of the Serengeti’s species. The Serengeti is renowned above all for its lion and leopard populations, and even outside the migration season, resident lion prides remain highly active here, offering excellent game viewing throughout the year. Each day wraps up by around 5:00 PM with dinner and a good night’s rest.

Day 8: Central Serengeti – Ngorongoro

After breakfast around 6:30 AM, you’ll depart with a packed lunch for a morning game drive through the Serengeti. Central Serengeti offers several distinct game-viewing circuits, and your guide will choose the best routes based on what you’ve already seen and your particular interests — sightings of big cats, especially lion, are common, alongside a broad range of other wildlife. In the afternoon, you’ll continue on to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, staying either within the conservation area itself or at a lodge in nearby Karatu, depending on your accommodation choice. The day ends with dinner and a good night’s rest.

Day 9: Ngorongoro Crater Tour (5 Hours) – Lake Eyasi

The final leg of your safari begins early. After a quick breakfast, you’ll descend onto the crater floor around 6:30 AM. Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest inactive, unbroken volcanic caldera, with a floor spanning roughly 260 square kilometers and walls rising more than 2,000 feet. The five-hour game drive across the crater floor delivers plenty of wildlife activity — keep your camera close, as elephant, buffalo, black rhino, hippo, hyena, cheetah, and lion are all commonly seen. After a picnic lunch at the scenic Hippo Pool, you’ll begin the steep climb back up to the crater rim before driving on to your accommodation at Lake Eyasi to unwind for the rest of the day. A short late-afternoon or evening excursion to the shores of Lake Eyasi is also worth considering, where flamingo and other birdlife are frequently seen.

Day 10: Lake Eyasi – Arusha

Around 5:30 AM, following a light breakfast, you’ll depart the lodge to spend time with the Hadzabe, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer communities in East Africa, whose way of life has changed remarkably little over tens of thousands of years. You’ll join in on their early-morning routine, which may include a bush trek, hunting, and building a campfire, along with other activities such as honey gathering, foraging for baobab fruit, and simply experiencing daily Hadzabe life. Later, you’ll visit the nearby Datoga community, another of the region’s indigenous groups, known for their skills in farming, livestock keeping, and — among some — generations-old craftsmanship forging knives, arrowheads, and jewelry for both the Datoga and Hadzabe peoples. Afterward, you’ll return to your lodge for a hot lunch before the final drive to Arusha, arriving by around 5:00 PM.
